Adolescent Mentoring Program (AMP) - Formerly known as "Prison Ministry", students plan fun and meaningful activities for incarcerated youth at the Northern Regional Juvenile Detention Center. The bi-weekly visits last only an hour and transportation is usually provided.
Blood Drives - Throughout the year Wheeling Jesuit University hosts on-campus blood drives in partnership with the American Red Cross and Central Blood Bank. Students, employees and community members are encouraged to donate or volunteer with the event.
Disc Dance/Super Sunday - Each semester Wheeling Jesuit is host for a dance event that welcomes local group homes of residents with mental disabilities. These fun-filled events are just another way for our student body to engage the community.
Federal Community Service Work Study - The Federal Community Service Work program places students with a local nonprofit that meets their interests and skills. Students that qualify for Federal Community Work Study are paid $7.25/hour and can work up to 15 hours per week at the organization.
HESS Mentoring Program - WJU students pair up with 6-12th graders on campus for a weekly dinner, tutoring and activity. Learn more at the HESS webpage
Make a Difference Day - Make a Difference Day is a part of the First Year Seminar course and kicks off the school year. Incoming First Years serve with a local nonprofit such as Appalachian Outreach, Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center, Faith In Action Caregivers, Rails to Trails, Mount St. Joseph or Wheeling Soup Kitchen. Agency staff share information about their organization's mission and services to show how the students' work is benefiting the community.
Special Olympics - In early May Wheeling Jesuit University hosts the Northern Panhandle Special Olympics. Over 200 volunteers run events or pair up with a competing athlete, making this the largest on-campus service event of the year.
United Way Day of Caring - Each year the United Way hosts their annual campaign kickoff event, the Day of Caring. Teams of Wheeling Jesuit staff, faculty and administrators spend the day serving with agencies all across the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. Wheeling Jesuit teams have served at the YWCA, Children's Museum of the Ohio Valley, St. Vincent de Paul's and Holy Family Childcare Center.
