Wheeling, WV

Wheeling Jesuit University has officially launched its Annual Giving campaign, "1,151 Reasons to Give," for 2018-19. The student body is what makes Wheeling Jesuit an institution unlike any other, which is why the Office of Advancement chose to use "1,151" for this year’s theme representing the total number of students at the University.

Each student, as talented and special as the next, benefits from the gifts raised during this campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to enhance students' academic and extracurricular experiences at WJU.

"Gifts received through the Annual Giving campaign at Wheeling Jesuit University provide promising, talented young scholars with access to life-changing education. They are the direct beneficiaries as gifts received are used to help fund financial aid awards, student research projects, immersion trips, internships and mentorships, academic and extracurricular programs and activities, improving campus facilities, and so much more," said Janet Nolan, director of annual giving.

As part of the campaign, the University will feature its talented students over the next several months in a "spotlight series." The students will have the opportunity to discuss why they chose to attend Wheeling Jesuit and what they have experienced during their time on campus.

The first two students highlighted are Darius Berry, class of 2019, and Lucy Hritzo, class of 2018. Darius described WJU as the "perfect fit" because it's close enough to his hometown in Maryland, and he has been able to manage his studies while still being involved on campus as well as a student-athlete on the track team. Berry plans to attend pharmacy school after graduating in May.

Lucy explained that she chose WJU because of the "caring and loving individuals who want to see the students succeed." She is also heavily involved on campus. She participates in choir, adventure society, student government, and also shines her light as a Luceat. Hritzo plans to attend medical school after graduation.

Donations -- no matter the size -- have a direct impact on the students at Wheeling Jesuit. These funds allow the students to complete their educational goals without having to worry about financial hardship or distractions.

"Through your support of this year's annual fund you can make a significant difference in the lives of each one of our 1,151 students. Your gift will be utilized to ensure that the University provides the highest level of educational experience possible for our campus community. To me, there is no greater joy than giving when you know the support is truly valued. The entire University appreciates your support," said Joseph Edmiston, vice president of advancement.
