Dear Alumni and Friends,

I am incredibly excited and honored to have been selected to serve as the Director of Athletics here at Wheeling Jesuit University, and what a whirlwind it’s been since my return to the Ohio Valley.  Fall Sports are well under way, we are preparing for what should be another great year of basketball and developing plans for the first-ever football program here at WJU.  It’s a great time to be a Cardinal.rudy_yovich_web.jpg

Though my time here has been brief, I’ve discovered a number of things to be true.

First, we have outstanding student-athletes that excel in the classroom, field of competition and community. We have talented and dedicated coaches who are committed to developing our young women and men into tomorrow’s leaders. And, we are blessed with a supportive administration, staff and faculty that live the WJU mission daily and provide our students with truly transformative experiences.  I also have observed, first-hand, the passion and support shown to WJU athletics from our stakeholders, including alumni and community members.

Fundamentally, our goals within the athletic department are to recruit qualified student-athletes and provide them with the tools necessary to graduate and become leaders in their communities. We also want to win Mountain East and NCAA championships. NCAA Division II athletics provides Wheeling Jesuit University with the perfect platform for that overall balance of Academics and Athletics.

It takes great collaboration from many groups to make those goals become reality. A former colleague of mine was fond of a proverb that truly captures the essence of our developing culture … “If you want to go fast, go alone … If you want to go far, go together.”

We want to go as far as possible, but we need to do it together, student-athletes, coaches, staff, faculty, alumni, administration, and most importantly, our fantastic Wheeling area community. All of us in the WJU Athletic Department invite you to become part of our family, be it simply by attending a game, or through philanthropic efforts.  We are truly proud to represent Wheeling, West Virginia on a national stage, and we want Wheeling to be “Cardinal Proud!

I hope to get the chance to see you all at an event in the near future.

Luceat Lux Vestra! And…Go Cardinals!
