Preparations are under way for Wheeling Jesuit University's annual Culture Fest 2017 - a celebration of international culture.

WJU's International Club is planning native dishes to serve and preparing festive clothing to wear Saturday, April 1 for this year's event. Culture Fest 2017 will begin at 11 a.m. in the Benedum Room, located inside Swint Hall.

“Each year, Culture Fest gives our international students the opportunity to showcase their talent through native dance and cultural presentations. This is a chance for the students to lift up their heritage, allowing them to share it with fellow students and people in the community,” said Sunnie English, WJU's international student coordinator.

In addition to performances, the students cook and serve ethnic dishes.

“The two-hour event is an excellent chance for the campus and community to learn, taste ethnic foods and be entertained. Admission is free and those attending will have the chance to sample food from more than 20 countries,” English added.

Entertainment will include a combination of dance, music, dramatic readings and short presentation. Performing this year are the Allegro Dance Company, Philippine American Performing Arts of Greater Pittsburgh, The Cretan Association of Pittsburgh, Gallowglass, Kyiv Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, as well as the international students from WJU.

There also will be a 50/50 raffle, as well as a blind auction.

Wheeling Jesuit University is the second home to more than 80 international students from nearly 30 countries.

“The Benedum Room, our dining hall on campus, will be transformed to showcase an international atmosphere. The students really embrace the culture and diversity on Wheeling Jesuit's campus. We invite the local residents to join us for this celebration,” English said.

Countries being represented this year are Australia, Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, DR Congo, Egypt, Fiji, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Pakistan, Russia, Rwanda, Scotland, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago, United Kingdom, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
