Wheeling Jesuit University
In Memory of Thomas L. Ritz, MD
November 9, 1933 - September 30, 1999

On September 30, 1999, Wheeling Jesuit University lost a special member of its community. Dr. Ritz worked as a physician in the Health Center in addition to maintaining his practice in family medicine at the Oakwood Clinic with his partner, Dr. Thomas G. Wack, Jr. He was a graduate of the pioneer class of Wheeling College in 1959 and also was a graduate of the West Virginia School of Medicine in 1965.

Dr. Ritz enjoyed being with his family, traveling to new places, being outdoors, working on his farm, listening to music, and most of all, riding his motorcycle with his wife, Betty. He also loved his work and he was an inspiration to all of us in the medical profession. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, he brought joy to all who worked with him and all who benefited from his medical expertise.

On July 1st, 2000, a tree was dedicated in his memory by his brother, Jim Ritz, and his uncles. The tree is located on campus near the Health Center and provides all who loved him with a place to honor his memory. In addition, a scholarship fund has been established in his name for deserving students who wish to become physicians. Because of this generosity, his legacy will live on at Wheeling Jesuit University and beyond.

He will always be remembered in our hearts as our mentor, our colleague, our counselor, and our dear friend.
