Respiratory Care Sample Courses

RETH 345 Neonatal and Pediatric Respiratory Care (3crs) S
Students will master concepts relating to: fetal growth and development, fetal gas exchange and circulation, the process of neonatal delivery, and common neonatal and pediatric pulmonary disease processes. Material learned from GSCI 334 Pathophysiology- is also applied and furthered (congenital cardiac defects, asthma, hypersensitivity reactions, aspiration). This course will help students to identify and master the following skill:  Antenatal assessment, high risk delivery, neonatal and pediatric patients, invasive blood gas analysis and cardiovascular monitoring, non-invasive monitoring, airway management of the neonate and pediatric patient, CPAP and all types of mechanical ventilation, ECMO and surfactant replacement therapy.


RETH 363 Clinical Orientation (2 crs) F (a clinical practicum) F
This junior level clinical is designed to allow the student to experience enhanced application of theories learned in the co-enrolled RETH 325 course.  This course is to orient students to the various hospital and clinic environments in which Respiratory practitioners work.  Student are to seek competence in basic respiratory therapy administered within the general care (floor) areas of the hospital. 


RETH 466 Principles of Critical care 2 (4crs) (a clinical practicum) F
This course will give the student more direct responsibility for the patient –ventilator system in the adult, pediatric and neonatal intensive care areas.  The student will apply and refine skills presented in RETH 366. The student will also spend a week with a pulmonary physician for the integration of didactic and clinical investigations of patients and case studies.


RETH 340 Advanced Ventilation and Adjunctive therapies (3 cr) S
This course is designed to allow the student to master ventilation techniques and advanced cardiopulmonary procedures. Students will be exposed to current ventilation protocols, ventilator weaning theory and advanced assessment skills as well as provide pathology specific mechanical ventilation. Adjunctive therapies and diagnostics such as medical gas therapies (NO, HE/OX, etc.)  chest x-ray interpretation, HFOV, chest tubes, arterial monitoring, VCO2 and ETCO2 monitoring, IV/IM skills are also taught in this course.
