Department of Modern Languages

In our globalized world, there is high demand for men and women who are fluent in other languages and can navigate other cultures. Here at Wheeling Jesuit, we are aware of these needs and our majors in French, Spanish and Romance Languages more than just meet them. The modern language programs develop students who are knowledgeable about diverse people, histories and customs and are comfortable communicating in different settings and languages.

Why choose Wheeling Jesuit University?

Wheeling Jesuit University's program in modern languages is comprised of three majors: Spanish, French and Romance Languages, giving students who wish to study both Spanish and French the chance to do so. Majors in modern languages must complete a variety of different courses that emphasize language structure, global literature and international cultures. A senior seminar must also be completed which includes a comprehensive exam and allows for a research project.

These majors provide you with both a solid foundation in your individualized field and the opportunity to pursue your particular interests within your own area of personalized study. Students take a variety of courses to develop their oral and reading proficiency in the language of their choice and also have the option to study both Spanish and French culture and literature. Both short and long-term study abroad opportunities are available and very affordable. Our study abroad programs create ideal opportunities to help you build proficiency and capability in your area of study and language.

Recognizing the demands placed upon graduates in today's world, the faculty recommends that you develop expertise in a specialty in addition to modern languages. You can accomplish this in one of several ways: a double major, a minor in another academic discipline or an interdisciplinary major. Some specialties that would compliment your modern languages major include, but are not limited to:

  • international business
  • international studies
  • history
  • political science
  • political and economic philosophy
  • communications
  • english
  • professional education.
