Internship/Portfolio Requirements

Internship/Service Requirement for COM Majors
The Professional Portfolio

Communications majors are required to do four semesters of internships or service experiences.

The Communications and Composition Department has moved to a portfolio-based system to track internship and service projects. The advantages of a portfolio-based system include giving students control over the kind of professionalization they want to do and the degree to which they want to professionalize, providing flexibility in keeping records of the diverse projects Com majors participate in, and building a professional portfolio of work that students can show to potential employers. Internships, communication-based service projects, and communication-based on-campus activities count towards meeting the Portfolio requirement.

Internships:

  • Register for academic credit
  • COM 473 (1 credit): 45-89 hours/semester
  • COM 273 (2 credits): 90-134 hours/semester
  • COM 373 (3 credits): 135+ hours/semester
  • Go through the Registrar's Office for enrollment
  • Follow requirements of WJU's Internship Handbook
  • Submit required materials to Portfolio for record-keeping
  • Graded

Communication-based service projects (smaller communication-based projects that require fewer than 45 hours of work per semester):

  • No academic credit
  • Go through Service for Social Action Center to sign liability waiver
  • Follow requirements of WJU's Internship Handbook
  • Submit required materials to Portfolio for record-keeping
  • Portfolio graded as part of COM 402 coursework in second semester of senior year

Communication-based on-campus activities such as the student newspaper or a dramatic performance:

  • No academic credit
  • Submit required materials to Portfolio for record-keeping
  • Portfolio graded as part of COM 402 coursework in second semester of senior year

Students should plan to do one internship or service project per year.

Students who transfer into the major can have their requirement amended to reflect the year they enter the department.
Students who transfer in as sophomores are required to do three internships/projects, juniors are required to do two, and seniors are required to do one.

Portfolios will be stored in the Department with the student's advisor.
Students are responsible for providing all updates and materials to their adviser for inclusion in their Portfolios. Students will discuss their progress in their Portfolio during pre-registration advising with their advisers each semester. Students are free to review the contents of their Portfolios at any time.
