Professor Joseph Laker has taught at St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN) and Wheeling Jesuit University. He received his Ph. D. from Indiana University (1975) in History with a specialization on modern East Asia. Dr. Laker has extensive experience living and traveling in a variety of places around the world, especially in East Asia. He has served as Director of the International Studies Program for a number of years and has organized and led several student tours abroad. While he has written on a variety of historical topics, most of his research and publications focus on economic development and the development of business institutions in East Asia. He is especially interested in the impact that differing cultural institutions and values have on economic growth and progress. In addition to a variety of courses on Asian history, Dr. Laker teaches a course on Entrepreneurship and American Economic Development.
