Wheeling Jesuit University Sees 29 Percent Increase in New Students, Welcomes Class of 2020

WHEELING, W.Va., Aug. 18, 2016 - Wheeling Jesuit kicked off the start of the 2017 academic year with a 29 percent increase in new students entering the university this fall.

On Aug. 18, during Freshmen Move In Day, WJU welcomed 275 new students to campus. This day has become an annual tradition at WJU.

Organized by the Office of Student Life, an army of volunteers, made up of students, faculty, employees and alumni, help the incoming class unload cars and move their belongings into the students' rooms.

WJU President, Rev. James Fleming, S.J., spent the morning walking through the halls welcoming the new students and their families to campus - and calmed down some nervous parents as well.

“Freshman Move in Day is always an exciting day on campus because it marks the beginning of our academic year. We are pleased to welcome our newest Cardinals to campus. This new stage of their journey - for both students and parents - will allow these women and men to learn, grow and mature - and we look forward to guiding them along this educational journey,” Fr. Fleming said.

Once moved in, students had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with campus and surrounding areas.

This year's incoming class hales from 23 states and 11 countries around the globe. The class is also made up of 50 percent males and 50 percent females and touts a grade point average of 3.4 with an average ACT score of 22 and SAT score of 1015.

“We are excited to welcome this incoming class. Overall, these young men and women are very impressive academically. In addition to the new freshman class, Wheeling Jesuit welcomes more than two dozen new international students from 11 counties around the globe,” said Dan Dentino, dean of Student Development.

In addition to a number of activities on campus, the class of 2020 will begin its year performing service at WJU's annual “Make a Difference Day” scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 20.
